The Olympics. An event held every four years where people we never heard of with names we can’t pronounce, from countries we never heard of and names we can’t pronounce, compete in events we neither understand or care about. But, occasionally, someone causes excitement and interest based upon a truly remarkable display of skill, courage and determination.
In 1984, America was captivated by the resolve, grit and perseverance of a diminutive, female gymnast, who overcame injury, adversity and long odds to become a Gold Medal Champion both loved and admired by all. She was feted and honored all across the USA and even achieved that ultimate, athletic honor of having her picture festooned on the front of breakfast cereal boxes from coast to coast.
This year, another diminutive, female gymnast also gained notoriety at the Olympics, but, rather than earning gold medals, did so with actions which would not even warrant a participation trophy. Instead of overcoming obstacles and facing the challenges of competition, she retreated to cower in her safe space. It was unclear what exactly went awry, but appeared to be a mental disorder which a certain laxative commercial describes as being “cranky-pated.” These are the “woke” Olympics.
Nothing as mundane as sprains and strains. Now, future teams will replace coaches and trainers with headshrinkers and therapists. Psychologists will replace physicians. Rather than athletes pleading with coaches to send them into the competition, they will beg off due to a headache. 1984 is indeed, very long gone.
