Former Miami S Avantae Williams' case closed, no action on battery charges - The Athletic

The criminal case against former Miami safety Avantae Williams has been closed with no action taken on three charges against him, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

Last month, Williams was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, according to records. He pleaded not guilty on July 26 and was released under house arrest on $10,000 bond with, as a condition to his bond, a restraining order against him.

Williams was dismissed by the Hurricanes last month and has since entered the transfer portal. Williams' attorney, Michael Etienne Jr., told The Athletic on Saturday that he's working to get Williams reinstated at Miami. Etienne Jr. said Edwin Pata, who works in Miami's recruiting office, asked him to take Williams' case.

"We talked to our guys about (the incident with Williams). It can be just one poor decision, one poor choice. Unfortunately, it has consequences," Miami coach Manny Diaz said on Aug. 6. "I hate to just trivialize it as just a learning incident, but we spoke to our team about it and what it means, and hopefully we all can learn from it going forward."

Williams, 20, was Miami's top recruit in the 2020 signing class, and ranked the No. 2 safety in the country by 247Sports' Composite Rating, choosing the Hurricanes over Florida on national signing day.

He sat out his freshman season in 2020 due to unspecified medical issues found during a preseason exam.
