Ohio’s coronavirus case rate up again to close to 183.7 cases per 100,000 over last two weeks - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ohio’s coronavirus case rate for the third consecutive week is getting worse, moving away from Gov. Mike DeWine’s goal before he said he will lift all health orders - a goal he set at 50 cases per 100,000 over a two-week period.

The rate released Thursday afternoon as part of the state’s weekly update will be close to 183.7 cases per 100,000 residents over the last two weeks, cleveland.com projects.

This would be a rate worse than where it was when DeWine announced his plan March 4 to tie lifting of health orders to a reduction to 50 per 100,000. The rate at that time was 178.5 cases per 100,000.

The rate dipped to 143.8 cases per 100,000 in the update on March 18, before increasing each week since then.

The rate is based on when people became sick, not when the cases were reported. And it excludes incarcerated individuals.

The official number released by the state likely will differ some from the cleveland.com estimate, mainly because it’s unknown how many of the recently reported cases involve incarcerated people. But in each of the last four weeks the cleveland.com projection has been within decimal points of the official number.

Despite the recent increases, however, the rate is well below the high of 845.5 per 100,000 in mid-December.

It was last below 50 cases per 100,000 in June.
