For the first time since Oct. 26, Allegheny County has posted a single-day covid case number below 100.
Monday’s report by the Allegheny County Health Department shows 94 new coronavirus cases, something that hasn’t happened in the past six months.
While health officials have often said Monday’s case counts are lower than other days of the week — because of weekend lulls in testing and reporting — the number is lower than the past 25 Mondays.
Lower case counts have been happening over the past week not only in Allegheny County but across the state.
Monday’s two-day report — which covers new cases reported in the past 48 hours — shows 5,043 cases in Pennsylvania, a more than 11% drop from last week’s two-day report (5,675).
In Allegheny County, the two-day total of new cases was 311 — a 27% decline over last week’s numbers (428).
Cases
Of Pennsylvania’s latest cases, 4,092 were confirmed through PCR testing and 951 were listed as probables. Health officials define a probable case as one in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or covid symptoms with a “high-risk exposure” to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.
It’s the eighth straight day that the state’s seven-day case average has declined. Its current average of 3,824 is the lowest it has been since March 28. The seven-day case total drops to 26,766.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 1,136,057 recorded cases of coronavirus in Pennsylvania, with 957,971 of those cases confirmed through PCR testing.
The Allegheny County Health Department reported Monday there were 311 new covid-19 cases in the county over the past two days, with 234 confirmed through PCR testing and 77 listed as probable. New cases ranged in age from 5 months to 99 years, with a median age of 31 years.
The county’s seven-day case average — 294 — dropped for the ninth straight day and is the lowest it’s been since March 22 (289).
The age range of the latest cases — 159 female, 152 male — are:
- Ages 0-4: 13
- Ages 5-12: 21
- Ages 13-18: 46
- Ages 19-24: 34
- Ages 25-49: 117
- Ages 50-64: 60
- Ages 65 and over: 20
Allegheny County has recorded a total of 96,168 covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic last year, with 73,144 cases confirmed.
Health officials reported 116 new cases in Westmoreland County over the two-day period — nearly matching last week’s two-day report of 115.
Of Westmoreland’s latest cases, 79 were confirmed and 37 were listed as probable. The county has seen a total of 32,252 cases since the pandemic began, 21,920 of which have been confirmed.
Philadelphia led the state’s counties with the most two-day cases at 860. They were followed by Montgomery (360), Allegheny (311), Bucks (293) and Berks (254).

Last week, there were six counties with two-day case counts over 300. This week, only three were that high. Last week’s top 10 reporting counties averaged new cases at 378, this week the average was 312.
Deaths
On Monday, state health officials reported that in the past two days only five new deaths were identified by the Pennsylvania death registry. It’s unclear whether the report is accurate or there is a glitch with the registry. The state’s Department of Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
If the report is correct, the state has now recorded 25,988 covid-related deaths since the pandemic began. The five new deaths bring the state’s seven-day death toll to 298, dropping below 300 for the first time since April 20.
Allegheny County health officials reported one new death — a person in their 50s — over the past two days, putting the county’s seven-day total at 25 deaths. To date, the county has recorded 1,859 covid-related deaths.
In Westmoreland County, there was one reported covid death, bringing the county’s total to 736.
Hospitalizations
As health officials have pointed out before, hospitalization numbers tend to follow case counts by a week or so. As reflective of lower cases in the state, hospitalization numbers have started to decline as well. In the latest report, there are 2,495 Pennsylvanians currently in the hospital for covid-19 — a drop of 81 in the past two days. Of those hospitalized in the state, 517 are in intensive care units, with 248 on ventilators.
Allegheny County saw a drop of 37 patients in hospitals in the past two days, with 254 currently in facilities, 84 of whom are in ICUs and 40 on ventilators.
In Westmoreland County, there are 46 residents in hospitals, a drop of four in the past two days, with six people in ICUs and six on ventilators.
Vaccinations
On the vaccine front, the latest data from the state shows that more than 5.8 million people (nearly 46%) have at least one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna covid-19 vaccine or the single-shot Johnson & Johnson. When it comes those who have been fully vaccinated, the numbers are more than 3.6 million (nearly 29%). The numbers include the city of Philadelphia, which tracks its vaccinations separate from the state.
Among Allegheny County residents, 380,854 (31.1%) are considered fully vaccinated, with 636,786 (52.1%) having at least one dose.
In Westmoreland County, 97,909 (26.8%) residents are considered fully vaccinated, while 147,298 (40.3%) have received at least one dose.
