Michigan reported 4,867 new coronavirus cases and 108 deaths Thursday, April 22.
Of the 108 deaths reported Thursday, 75 occurred prior to the last 24 hours and were found during a vital records review. These reviews take place three times per week.
The state is averaging 5,538 new COVID-19 cases per day and 58 new deaths per day over the last week. This is the lowest seven-day average since April 2, when the weekly average was 5,128 cases per day. This is the eighth day of day-over-day decline for the case average.
Since the pandemic began, the state has reported 809,591 coronavirus cases and 17,139 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Additionally, the state has reported 91,365 probable cases and 1,112 probable deaths, in which a physician and/or antigen test ruled it COVID-19 but no confirmatory PCR test was done.

Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 79 reported new cases on Thursday. Wayne County led in new cases with 936, followed by Oakland with 584 and Macomb with 565.
Other top reporting counties included Kent with 326 new cases, Genesee with 195, Ottawa with 177, Washtenaw with 129, Ingham with 112, Saginaw with 108 and St. Clair with 100.
Twenty-six counties reported new deaths, including Wayne reporting 29, Macomb reporting 17 and Oakland reporting 12. Genesee and St. Clair reported five each, while Ingham reported four.
Kent, Eaton, Jackson and Berrien reported three new deaths each, while Saginaw, Lenawee, Lapeer, Van Buren, Sanilac and Crawford reported two each.
The following counties reported one new death each: Washtenaw, Bay, Calhoun, Montcalm, Wexford, Oceana, Ogemaw, Kalkaska and Oscoda.

Hospitals across Michigan were treating 3,198 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, including 52 pediatric patients and 895 patients in the ICU.
That’s down from last week, when hospitals were treating 4,159 such patients on April 15. However, patients in the ICU have risen from last week, when hospitals were treating 848 such patients.
Of the 58,137 diagnostic tests processed on Wednesday, 12.1% came back positive for SARS-CoV-2. The average positivity rate over the last seven days is 13.1%.
Case reporting
First is a chart showing new cases reported to the state each day for the past 30 days. This is based on when a confirmed coronavirus test is reported to the state, which means the patient first became sick days before.

(In a few instances, a county reported a negative number (decline) in daily new cases, following a retroactive reclassification by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In those instances, we subtracted cases from the prior date and put 0 in the reported date.)
The next chart below shows new cases for the past 30 days based on onset of symptoms. In this chart, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete because of the lag time between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.
