New York state has confirmed its first case of coronavirus Sunday evening.
“We have learned of the 1st positive case of COVID-19 in NY,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Twitter.
The patient -- a woman in her 30s -- contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, according to an official statement from the governor’s office Sunday night. The woman is now isolated in her home.
Although the governor did not say where the woman lives in the state, the New York Post reported she’s from Manhattan.
“There is no reason for undue anxiety -- the general risk remains low in NY,” Cuomo tweeted.
Last month, state health officials asked about 700 people across the state to self-isolate after returning from places with coronavirus cases, according to the Department of Health. That included eight people in Onondaga County, county spokesman Justin Sayles said last week.
President Donald Trump has assured Americans that the country is “very, very ready” to face whatever threat the disease poses head on. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that it’s not a matter of “if,” but “when.” CDC officials suggested that quarantines may become necessary as more COVID-19 or “novel coronavirus” cases are detected.
There are now 76 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the United States, according to reports Sunday night.
The woman in New York state who tested positive for coronavirus has respiratory symptoms, but is not in serious condition, Cuomo said in his statement. The governor also said the woman has been in a “controlled situation” since arriving in New York.
“The positive test was confirmed by New York’s Wadsworth Lab in Albany, underscoring the importance of the ability for our state to ensure efficient and rapid turnaround, and is exactly why I advocated for the approval from Vice President Pence that New York was granted just yesterday,” Cuomo said.
“There is no cause for surprise -- this was expected,” he continued. “As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York.”
Cuomo asked the state Legislature to approve a $40 million emergency management authorization last week as the state prepares to respond to the possibility of the spread of coronavirus in New York.
The money will allow the New York State Department of Health to hire additional staff and procure equipment and any other resources necessary to respond to the virus. Cuomo said legislative leaders had indicated they supported the request, but they have yet to approve it.
Cuomo said state officials are working with hospitals and other healthcare officials to prepare for the appearance of the virus.
"The threat you don’t take seriously is the one that becomes serious,” he has said.
On Sunday, Cuomo said that although someone in the state has now tested positive for coronavirus, there is no need to panic.
“We are diligently managing this situation,” Cuomo said, "and will continue to provide information as it becomes available.”
