After nearly three weeks of rising case numbers, Vermont’s Covid-19 surge is trending downward again, an encouraging statistic in the battle against the pandemic and a reflection on the state’s successful vaccination strategy.
While case numbers remain high in the northern half of the state, reflective of a long-lingering surge in Franklin and Orleans counties, several towns dropped out of the category for highest case rates, according to Department of Health data.
St. Albans City and Enosburgh were the only communities in Franklin County that remained in the highest category of case spread, down from five or more towns in the weeks before. Several communities in Rutland County, including Rutland City itself, also moved down from that highest category, although Killington and Castleton remained in that bracket.
Orleans County remained among the hardest-hit based on its population, with these communities staying in the highest case rate: Barton, Irasburg, Newport City and Troy. Nearby communities in the highest category included Corinth, Danville, Lunenburg, Ryegate and Topsham.
Covid variants are spreading in 10 of Vermont’s 14 counties, with Chittenden leading the state. That could be because the variants are driving case surges there, but it could also mean that higher case numbers in recent weeks have made the variant easier to detect.
