Morrison County confirms first COVID-19 case; state death toll rises by 13 overnight - SC Times

Thirteen more Minnesotans died of COVID-19, the second-highest one-day spike so far in the pandemic that has been responsible for 134 deaths in Minnesota since March 21.

The Minnesota Department of Health's Sunday report said 143 more people have tested positive for COVID-19. Confirmed Minnesota cases now stand at 2,356.

As of Sunday's report, 228 Minnesotans are hospitalized with more than half — 116 —  in ICUs. 

An additional case was confirmed in Sherburne County overnight, bringing its caseload to 13. Stearns and Benton case counts held steady at 16 and four, respectively. No deaths have been reported in the three-county area.

Elsewhere in Central Minnesota, Morrison County officials on Saturday announced the county's first confirmed case. The patient, described as a "younger resident," is isolated at home, according to County Administrator Deb Gruber. 

Wright County has 25 confirmed cases and one death. 

Of Minnesotans with test-confirmed cases of COVID-19, 1,160 no longer require isolation, according to MDH.  

The deaths reported Sunday include: 

  • a Dakota County resident in their 60s
  • five Hennepin County residents in their 90s
  • a Hennepin County resident in their 80s
  • a Mille Lacs County resident in their 60s
  • an Olmsted County resident in their 60s
  • a St. Louis County resident in their 70s
  • a Washington County resident in their 80s 
  • a Winona County resident in their 80s
  • a Winona County resident in their 100s

Ten of the deaths were residents in long-term facilities.

Nobles County JBS plant

MDH is investigating 69 potential cases in Nobles County linked to a JBS meat-packing plant in Worthington. MDH has found 26 employees, five family members and one person who works for a plant in Iowa are positive.

Staff from the Department of Labor and Industry and MDH plan to visit the plant Monday to observe health screening and social distancing practices. 

Wayzata outbreak

Forty-seven residents of the Meridian Manor assisted-living facility were relocated Saturday because a majority of the staff and administrators are ill with COVID-19 and unable to care for residents, according to MDH. Seven residents were taken to hospitals, 13 residents were placed with family, friends or relatives. The remainder went to other care facilities.

Updated demographics

Just under 70% of Minnesota's confirmed cases are in people younger than 65, but the median age of COVID-19 fatalities here is 85 years old. The youngest person to die was 56 years old, the oldest was 104.

The youngest hospitalized patient to date was 4 weeks old. The oldest was 102 years old. 

The median age of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is 64, the median age of those needing ICU services is 65.

To date, 45,716 tests have been performed in Minnesota since Jan. 20. 

Minnesota confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on March 7, its first death on March 21.
