There have been 3,085 deaths related to the coronavirus outbreak in Michigan so far, with 108 new fatal cases reported by state health officials Friday, April 24.
Michigan becomes the third state to surpass 3,000 deaths, after New York and New Jersey. It’s the 15th day this month with least 100 new COVID-19 deaths reported in the state.
The number of new confirmed coronavirus cases increased again Friday, for the fourth day in a row. The state announced 1,325 new positive tests Friday, bringing the total to 36,641.
The state releases test data two days after the the tests are conducted. The most recent data point is from Wednesday, April 22, and shows 7,368 tests completed – the most done in a single day.
The goal is to test 15,000 people per day, said Michigan Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun. She also encourages people to look at wider trends in new case amounts.
“It’s important that, as we look at this, we don’t just focus in on one specific day,” Khaldun said. “We’re going to be looking at rolling averages.”
In the last seven days, Michigan has averaged 945 new cases per day. In the seven days before, Michigan averaged 1,034 new cases.
A piece of good news: Of the 7,368 tests done on Wednesday, only 16.9 percent came back positive, the lowest clip this week.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced relaxed restrictions to her stay-at-home order earlier Friday, but extended the order two weeks to May 15.
Michigan is releasing recovery data once per week. So far, 3,237 people have recovered from the virus in the state – meaning they tested positive for COVID-19 at some point, they’re still alive and it’s been at least 30 days since symptoms began.
Of the state's 83 counties, 78 have at least one case. There are 56 counties with at least one death, as Allegan County is now reporting its first death.
Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties remain the three hardest-hit areas in Michigan with 74.3 percent of the total confirmed cases and 82.1 percent of the state’s deaths from the virus – although both numbers are trending down.
The trio of Southeast Michigan counties are home to 39 percent of the state’s residents.
In Detroit alone, there were 8,473 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 830 deaths. The disproportionate number of cases in the Metro Detroit area is a result of multiple factors, including the large population, more aggressive testing in those counties, proximity to a major airport and community spread of coronavirus, experts say.
The virus is heavily affecting African Americans. About 33 percent of cases and 40 percent of people who died of the illness in Michigan were African Americans, who make up 14 percent of the state’s population.
Here's a look at the Michigan counties with the most confirmed cases:
1. Wayne County: 15,407 cases (1,443 deaths)
2. Oakland County: 6,804 cases (585 deaths)
3. Macomb County: 5,022 cases (504 deaths)
4. Genesee County: 1,434 cases (151 deaths)
5. Washtenaw County: 974 cases (47 deaths)
6. Kent County: 906 cases (29 deaths)
7. Saginaw County: 534 cases (40 deaths)
8. Ingham County: 391 cases (9 deaths)
9. Jackson County: 313 cases (15 deaths)
10. Livingston County: 312 cases (11 deaths)

COVID-19 PREVENTION TIPS
In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.
Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.
Carry hand sanitizer with you, and use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and when you go into places like stores.
