SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — On Friday, the total number of Covid-19 cases in North Carolina topped 2,000. Pender County, which had so far seem untouched, reported its first case and, tragically, Brunswick County reported its first death from the disease.

Across the region, New Hanover County had 42 cases, Brunswick County had 24, and Pender had reported its first case.

First Pender Covid-19 case

According to a release from Pender County, “[t]he individual who tested positive for COVID-19 has traveled outside the county. The individual was tested on March 31, 2020 and confirmation of a positive test result was received at the Pender County Health Department on April 3, 2020. This individual self-isolated at the onset of symptoms and remains in isolation.”

Pender County public health staff are working to identify anyone who came in close contact (i.e. within 6 feet) of the patient. Officials aren’t releasing any additional information about to the patient, in order to protect individual privacy.

According to the county’s public health director, the case is believed to be travel-related, and not tied to ‘community spread.’

“There is nothing to indicate this was a community-acquired transmission. All indications are this was travel-related. We are following all state protocols for contact tracing,” according to Pender County Health and Human Services Director Carolyn Moser.

First Brunswick Covid-19 fatality

According to Brunswick County officials, a Covid-19 patient “passed away in the early morning of Friday, April 3. The patient was considered a person at high risk for severe illness as they were over the age of 65 and had some underlying medical conditions.”

Public health officials said the case was possibly the result of ‘community spread,’ (i.e. with no known links to travel or exposure to another Covid-19 case).

“Public Health is working to conduct contact tracing to determine those who were in close contact with them. There is one household contact to this individual who is self-quarantining at home,” according to the county.

The county noted that death was not a previously identified Covid-19 case.

“This individual was not one of the previously identified positive cases in the County. They had taken a test before passing away, which was confirmed as positive today following their passing. To protect the families’ privacy, no further information about this patient will be released,” according to the county.

The county’s top public health official addressed concerns over the region’s first death from Covid-19.

“We recognize that this is tough news for all of us to hear, especially those who have a higher risk for illness, who also have dear ones struggling with this virus or are actively responding to the pandemic,” Health and Human Services Director David Stanley said. “We continue to urge everyone to stay calm and to follow the stay at home order and other mandates our state, our county, and our municipalities have issued to protect one another from this disease.”
