Long Beach adds 1 coronavirus case, total now 14 - Long Beach Press Telegram

The number of people in Long Beach who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus has grown to 14, and 140 others are now being monitored, health officials said Friday afternoon, March 20.

The city added one more positive test to its total count and 10 to the number of folks being monitored, a day after announcing three new cases — for a then-total of 13 — and 130 folks being monitored; three people have recovered.

The city on Thursday also joined Los Angeles County and Gov. Gavin Newsom in issuing a “Safer at Home” order, urging people to stay home unless they need to go out for essential reasons, such as grocery shopping, going to the pharmacy or seeking medical aid; people can also leave their homes to take a walk or go on a hike, as long as they maintain 6 feet of distance between themselves and others.

All businesses except those deemed essential must also close.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the newly positive person contracted the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19.

The city has so far reported one case that was traced back to community transmission, meaning the person did not have any known travel to areas where COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported.

On Wednesday, the VA Long Beach Healthcare System reported its first case of the coronavirus and closed to visitors. That case is not and will not be included in the Long Beach tally because the person is not a Long Beach resident.

On Friday, Los Angeles County public health officials reported that the total number of confirmed cases countywide had risen to 292, with two deaths. That’s 101 new confirmed cases in the past 48 hours.

The operators of Community Hospital, meanwhile, announced Thursday the facility — shuttered since the summer of 2018 — would open to transfer patients on Saturday, March 21.

Its emergency room, however, is not yet open and the hospital will not accept walk-in patients.

Still, the facility will add 158 hospital beds to the region, including 10 intensive care beds and 10 ventilators.

At first, Community Hospital will primarily take in transfer patients who do not have the novel coronavirus, to help relieve the burden of other hospitals, said Brandon Dowling, spokesman for Molina, Wu, Network, the firm operating Community. As the hospital increases intensive-care-unit operations, he added, the hospital will “be able to take on cases demanding a more acute level of care.”
