An El Segundo resident has tested positive for the novel coronavirus based on preliminary test results, the city said in a Friday, March 20, statement.
The case was included in the total count of 292 cases released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Friday and those officials were following up with the resident, city officials said.
Health officials announced 61 new cases Friday, making the El Segundo case 1 of the 101 new cases in the past 48 hours.
The city said the county health department is following up with people who may have had close personal contact with the El Segundo case and that, to maintain patient confidentiality, they cannot share details of the case.
The city said does not know the source of exposure or whether it was through the community or exposure to an individual known to have the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19.
There have been two deaths related to COVID-19 in Los Angeles County so far. The latest was reported on Thursday; it was a man in his 30s with underlying health conditions, who died in the Pasadena area.
County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said the list of confirmed cases included 138 people between the ages of 18 and 65.
“Younger people, while they might have a better outcome, are in fact one of the largest groups of people we have tested who are positive for COVID-19,” Ferrer said.
Ferrer said about 2,400 people have been tested so far at both public and commercial labs with roughly 10% testing positive.
“When we look at what’s happening in other cities and states,” she said, “we know that we need to be prepared for many more cases.”
