A Westchester resident has been confirmed as the second case of coronavirus in the state — and the first "community spread" case — Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday morning.
The city confirmed the virus Monday — the first day its public health laboratory began testing for coronavirus, according to his office. The Westchester resident has preexisting respiratory issues and is in serious condition at a city hospital. He is the first case of "community spread" coronavirus in New York meaning he had not traveled to any of the countries listed as disease centers.

“We have said from the beginning that it is likely we will see more positive cases of the coronavirus,” de Blasio said in a statement. “We are working closely with our state and federal partners to ensure we are taking the highest precautions to keep New Yorkers safe.”
Cuomo said the man, in his 50's, has at least one child at the SAR Academy on 254th Street in Riverdale, which has been closed. The man commutes into Manhattan, though state officials do not know whether he took public transportation.
"We are now going to track down possible connections," Cuomo said during a news conference in Albany.
Cuomo said the man, who is an attorney, had not traveled to any place on the “watch list” for areas with large outbreaks of the virus, but did visit Miami. State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker noted that the man’s travel “was a while back” and not when he was infectious.
The virus spreads from close, prolonged contact or if someone with coronavirus coughs or sneezes on another individual, doctors said. Immune-compromised people are at a higher risk for experiencing more serious complications or death.
The state Legislature late last night approved $40 million in emergency funding to fight the coronavirus while expanding the Cuomo administration’s authority to respond to the outbreak and other public health emergencies.
