REDFORD, MI - The exact contents of this concoction are so secret, the owner of this Michigan ice cream shop won’t tell us its ingredients. Only that it’s vegan and is made with Faygo Rock and Rye soda pop.
It’s the creation of Josh and Cody Hutchison at Dairy Whip in Redford located at 26215 Plymouth Road. The Hutchison’s do a flavor of the week each week and are also known for their Mountain Dew vegan soft serve, which they create once a week each summer. This Faygo flavor is available through Sunday, August 13.
They tell MLive that people flock to their ice cream stand for flavors which are made with pop, like the Mountain Dew. So they decided to create one with perhaps the most popular of all of the Faygo flavors.
“We have fun making flavors like this,” said Josh Hutchison. “People really do like the pop flavors.”
When MLive ran a story earlier this summer about the Mountain Dew soft serve, Hutchinson says their ice cream shop sold around 50 gallons of it in just one day. He says they usually sell less than half that amount on any given day.
“There were people who came here from Ohio, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Port Huron... all over! They were driving more than 100 miles to try it.”
Hutchison hopes he has another hit with the Faygo Rock and Rye. He says he won’t divulge the exact ingredients because people tried to copy the Mountain Dew vegan soft serve, and the less others know, the better.
“The Mountain Dew got a lot of attention and the online forums blew up with people trying to figure out how to do it.”
The Faygo Rock and Rye soft serve comes in a kids size for $2.99, the small (pictured) is $3.75, the medium sells for $4.80, the large is $5.59 and it’s $6.77 for a waffle cone. Dairy Whip is open daily from Noon - 10p.m.
