A variety of soft serve ice cream sold in Connecticut has recently been recalled over concerns it is contaminated with an infectious bacteria.
The brand, Real Kosher Ice Cream, has recalled its Soft Serve on the Go product due to potential Listeria contamination. The Brooklyn, New York-based ice cream brand is recalling both its ice cream and sorbet varieties of the product.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Connecticut was one of 20 states where the Soft Serve on the Go cups were distributed.
Two cases of Listerosis (the infection caused by the Listeria bacteria) have been reported to date — one in New York and the other in Pennsylvania. Both resulted in hospitalizations; the FDA said there have been no reported deaths from the outbreak.
Listerosis primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While pregnant women may experience mild symptoms, it is especially concerning for fetuses and newborns, as it can cause miscarriages, stillbirths and newborn deaths.
In older adults and those with weakened immune systems, the primary concern of a Listerosis infection is Meningitis, which is the "inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord," according to the World Health Organization.
Symptoms of Listerosis in mild cases may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most severe cases of the infection present more acute symptoms like headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.
Those who are concerned they may have consumed a food item with Listeria and have symptoms should seek medical care. Those who may have consumed a food item with Listeria but have no symptoms do not require tests or treatment, according to the CDC. Symptoms often present themselves between a few hours and two to three days of eating the contaminated food.
Customers who purchased the Real Kosher Ice Cream Soft Serve on the Go should dispose of the product or return it to its place of purchase for a full refund, per the FDA.
At the end of July, the CDC recalled a variety of ground beef that had been sold in Connecticut and surrounding states due to a Salmonella outbreak.
