Despite a two-week period of cold weather in early February that is still fresh on people's minds, this has been an extremely soft winter. For the three winter months of December through February, the average daily mean temperature of 16 degrees ranks as the 18th warmest winter out of the 140 winters on record for Fargo. For Grand Forks, the average daily mean temperature of 14.6 degrees ranks as the 15th warmest out of the 128 years on record. Those two weeks likely provided the most memorable moments of the winter, so the winter might not be recalled as being as mild as it was.
The absence of snowstorms also contributed to the softness of the winter. Over the past 40 winters, only the winter of 2014-15 produced less snow in our region. Of course, there is still time for additional snowfall from any spring storms that develop, but the general weather pattern makes any big late season snows unlikely.
