100 years ago: Judge Lennon sets bail at $2,500 in Garner case - Red Bluff Daily News

Justice of the Peace E. F. Lennon late yesterday afternoon fixed bail at $2,500 in the case of Thomas B. Garner, charged with embezzling $2,100 from the Diamond Match company while employed as a bookkeeper in the company’s branch office at Red Bluff, and who had been missing about a month when Sheriff M. O. Bullard and Deputy Sheriff E. L. Henry captured him at the ranch of William M. Hill at Horsetown, Shasta county, early Thursday morning.

Garner was taken before Judge Lennon to have his bail set and no other moves were made in the action. Under the law it is optional with Garner whether he has a preliminary hearing or waives that proceeding.

In view of intimations that he will plead guilty to the charge of embezzlement, he is likely to waive a preliminary hearing and let the case go direct to the superior court. It is reported that he will not lake any steps to obtain his release on bonds pending further proceedings.
