New Mexico recorded 198 new cases of COVID-19 and three deaths tied to the virus on Saturday as officials relax restrictions on private schools and indoor pools in certain counties around the state.
The updated numbers dropped the seven-day averages to 203 cases and eight deaths a day. The averages have fallen by more than half since this time last month, when they were 439 cases and 18 deaths a day.
Meanwhile, Governor’s Office spokeswoman Nora Meyers Sackett said Friday that the pandemic public health order has been modified as the virus case numbers go down.
She said private schools, like public schools, are allowed to move toward full reentry but still must abide by mask requirements and COVID-safe practices.
Additionally, Sackett said, indoor pools may reopen at partial capacity in counties in the “yellow” and “red” categories “for the purposes of physical therapy and socially distant exercise.”
Those whose deaths were announced Saturday were a woman in her 80s from Bernalillo County, a man in his 60s from Chaves County and a man in his 70s from Doña Ana County.
The majority of new cases were from Bernalillo County, with 74, Doña Ana County, with 28, and Otero County, which had 13. There were also five new cases among inmates at the Lea County Correctional Facility, which has recorded a total of 756 cases among inmates.
New Mexico has tallied 188,167 cases of COVID-19 and 3,850 deaths from the virus.
On Saturday, 127 people were hospitalized across the state with the virus.
The Health Department has designated 164,614 COVID-19 cases as having recovered.
