WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau West High School was placed on a soft lockdown Friday afternoon after a report of a student with a handgun in their backpack.
A news release from the district says Police were called to the campus at around 1:15 to investigate the report. The student in question was immediately located, and an unloaded pistol was found in their possession. They did not have any ammunition to go with the unloaded weapon.
The student was taken into police custody without incident.
The soft lockdown lasted about an hour. All students and staff members are safe, and no one was hurt in the incident.
District officials add that all safety protocols were followed to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
The investigation into the situation remains active, and no further information will be released at this time.
The district credits a student with sharing information about the unloaded handgun with a trusted adult in the school. Any parent or student that has questions or concerns about the incident is asked to get in touch with the district’s pupil services.
