BLACK HAWK COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) - The warm temperatures created wet conditions at Black Hawk Park causing damage to roadways from drivers.
Normally, Black Hawk Park during the month of March closes due to flooding. However, drivers caused damage to the grounds from softer roadways.
"We'll take a few days of being closed down to let the ground settle," Conservation Executive Director, Mike Hendrickson said.
Hendrickson says this happens during spring time.
"The shoulders along the roads get soft and that's what we are experiencing right now. We've had some gradual thawing and refreezing which has been wonderful, it's kept the river levels down," Hendrickson said.
Hendrickson and his crew say the damage from drivers can be seen throughout the park.
"Some of this is accidental, but we know a lot of this is intentional, and this is a pretty good example you shouldn't be missing the roadways this far," Hendrickson said.
As the ground hardens, crews will have to come back out to fill in the damaged shoulders of the road.
"So we'll probably have to spend some money bring some rock in here, and beef these shoulders up just a little bit. So that they can handle the traffic a little bit better," Hendrickson said.
Black Hawk Park remains open to the public for bicyclists and walkers. The gun range remains open as well.
Black Hawk County Conservation Board says they do not advise using the Cedar Valley Nature Trails due to snow and ice still on the trail.
