WFISD confirms COVID-19 case at Hirschi High School, total number unavailable Wednesday - Times Record News

A Wichita Falls ISD spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday that a student who attends both Hirschi High School and the Career Education Center has tested positive for COVID-19.

The total number of confirmed cases at WFISD since the academic year began Aug. 20 was not available Wednesday afternoon.

The case involving the Hirschi student is considered low risk, Ashley Thomas, WFISD communications officer, said.

All high school students are being notified of the case, and the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District is performing contact tracing, Thomas said.

In addition, the health district has contacted everyone considered to be a close contact to the positive case, she said.

It was unclear how many positive cases of the new coronavirus the district has had since the academic year began in August.

Thomas said Wednesday evening that staff members are working on gathering the data and putting it into a reportable format for the Texas Education Agency.

That information will be shared Tuesday, she said.

The school district is no longer sending press releases on each new case of COVID-19, Thomas said.

The district is notifying parents and staff members, as well as performing required state reporting of positive cases, she said.

Before the change, a WFISD press release stated Aug. 25 that the the first case was at Crockett Elementary School, followed by press releases on a case involving a student who attends both the CEC and Rider High School and then two more cases at Crockett Elementary School.
