Two things to know about Rodeo 39 Public Market, Orange County’s newest food hall which begins soft opening hours today. First, it’s not where you’d expect.

“We tell people we’re doing a project in Stanton but a lot of people don’t even know where Stanton is. They’re underdogs. And that resonated with me and with our team,” said developer Dan Almquist, managing partner of Frontier Real Estate Investment.

Second, Almquist doesn’t want you to think of it as a food hall even though 20 out of 27 tenants serve food or drinks. He wants you to see it as a hangout that nurtures a sense of community.

“Right now with all these things that are going on in the world, it’s a place where people can go and enjoy themselves,” he said. “I think that’s really important whether you’re going on a date, with a friend, with your family — I think, in a very humble way, we did a good job of creating someplace special.”

He picked his spot and then when he began picking tenants, focusing on what’s local without worrying about national chain anchor stores. “They might have a handful of locations, but the guys that own it are the guys that are running it,” he said. “You can feel it when you come in, this is important to everybody involved, beyond anything monetary. It’s really taking pride in what we do and in that sense of community.”

The location inspired him to opt for diversity.

“Look at what’s going on in Little Saigon in the Vietnamese community and the growth they’ve experienced. We saw an opportunity there to really do something special within that community.”

Almquist worked with Jasmin Gonzalez. Previously at 99 Ranch Market, she helped create Cravings, a warehouse-style global grocery in Chino Hills. Together they curated a collection of shops and restaurants that include a retro arcade, nail salon, even a tattoo parlor. The 37,000-square-foot space has plenty of outdoor seating and contemporary decor with lots of steel and glass, decorated with murals.

Of course, there will be plenty to eat and drink. Hook & Anchor will attract  seafood fans,  For noodles there’s Phoholic and Nandomo by Hironori. Banh Xeo Boys will serve Vietnamese crepes and save room for sweets at Dot & Dough doughnuts, Fika Fika Creamery ice cream and My First Kiss, a bakery with coffee and florals.

Bearded Tang, Stanton’s first brewery, will cater to the craft beer crowd and there’s also a full bar.

So as you’re eating and drinking your way around, Almquist hopes you’ll discover it’s not just about the food.

“We all take pride in that most of us were born and raised in Orange County and we celebrate the diversity. I think this project, in a time when there’s a lot of dissension, will create a lot of unity.”
