PEEKSKILL, NY — It has been four months since the Abbey Inn & Spa opened high atop its rock outcropping on the Hudson River.
Opening day was March 18. Also on that day, the coronavirus pandemic hit 2,382 cases in New York. Two days later, all but essential businesses were shut down across the state.
When General Manager Gilbert Baeriswil tells people about that timeline, they usually say, "Oh my."
"We never closed, actually," he told Patch. "A hotel being an essential business, we remained open. It was very slow in the beginning, we had a few nurses and people that helped at the hospital here.
"We didn't spend much in advertising. Gradually people found us and they would call and say 'are you open?' and then the news spread through word of mouth."
Since then, business has gradually increased. "We have 42 rooms altogether," he said, "We've gotten well over 60 percent occupancy on several weekend days already. We're already seeing some repeat business, that's always a good sign. I would say that business really kicked into higher gear in June."
That's also when the Abbey Inn & Spa's restaurant, Apropos, started outdoor dining service on the Grand Terrace in early June under phase 2 of the Hudson region's gradual reopening. SEE: Post Pandemic Peekskill: Outdoor Dining With A Hudson River View.
The hotel's spa finally opened under phase 3, and Baeriswil is pleasantly surprised at the business the spa has generated already under pandemic sanitizing protocols, with some days totally booked.
Many bookings are coming in from nearby, he said: New York City, Long Island, Bergen County, lower Connecticut.
Nestled at the southern end of the Hudson Highlands, the inn has a walking trail right on the property and easy access to all the parks and trails in the region as well as picturesque villages like Cold Spring and Rhinebeck.
"I think people have been cooped up for so long, they're craving to be out," Baeriswil said. "Obviously we are a small boutique hotel, I think that too is working in our favor."
All of it, of course, is taking place according to the restrictions forced by the new coronavirus outbreak.
"Like everybody else, we increased sanitizing, wearing masks. We pretty much have gone paperless where we can," Baeriswil said. "We continue to do the right thing and be safe for the employees and our guests. We take care of our guests as best we can."
