Data collected by the New York Times showed that Worcester State University has the highest number of coronavirus cases in Massachusetts among public colleges, those that compete in Division I athletics or are a member of an elite group of research universities.
Worcester State has reported 33 cases of coronavirus, which is the highest total among the schools in Massachusetts represented in the data. The figure, though, represents just a fraction of the cases felt by universities around the country and even in New England.
The University of Connecticut experienced the highest number of cases to date in New England with 112. Worcester State, with 33, had the second highest total in New England.
Of the 112 cases at UConn, 90 were associated with personnel at its health campus in Farmington, the school said in a statement. The other 22 were employees at the university but were all telecommuting at the time of their diagnosis, the school said.
Meanwhile, schools in the southern part of the United States have case totals that even dwarf UConn’s total. The University of Texas Austin has the highest total with 449. The University of Central Florida, one of the largest colleges in the country, reported 438 cases. The University of Georgia Athens confirmed the third highest total in the country with 390.
The totals also differ from UConn and Worcester State’s because a majority of the cases came recently, the data said, meaning growth is still likely. Meanwhile, the data show the cases at Worcester State and UConn occurred in the spring with new cases having plateaued.
Cases documented in the data include positives tests from students, faculty, staff and contractors.
All other schools in Massachusetts reported case totals below seven. The University of Massachusetts Amherst confirmed six cases, while UMass Medical School in Worcester reported four cases.
Boston College reported one case.
