UT-Arlington student tests positive for coronavirus; Collin County reports sixth case; Rec centers close - The Dallas Morning News

Updated 12:52 p.m. March 14: Revised to include additional information.

A student at the University of Texas at Arlington has tested positive for COVID-19, the university’s president said in an email Saturday. Meanwhile, Collin County has reported its sixth positive case.

UTA president Vistasp Karbhari provided no details about the gender or age of the student or how they may have become infected with the virus. Jeff Carlton, executive director of communications and media relations at UTA, said that in respect of the person’t privacy, the university would sharing any identifying information only with public health officials.

In his email, Karbhari said the university was working with Tarrant County public health officials to identify people the student may have been in contact with.

It is not clear if the student is a new case in Tarrant County, or among the cases already reported by the county.

To help with disease prevention, Carlton said that the university has stepped up cleaning high-touch areas on campus, like handrails, door knobs and common spaces, and that more hand sanitizer dispensers have been placed around campus.

Among other steps the university has taken to slow the virus, it extended its spring break by a week, with classes scheduled to resume online March 23 “until further notice.” And earlier this month, the university asked three students to self-isolate as a precaution after they returned from spending about a week in Asia.

Citywide measures have also been put into effect to help prevent the spread of the virus. On Friday, Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams declared a local state of disaster and recommended canceling gatherings of 250 or more.

Meanwhile, Collin County reported its sixth case of COVID-19 on Saturday. The new case is a 47-year-old Plano woman who is self-isolating in her home, according to the county. Her case is not connected to any others in North Texas, it said.

No new cases of the virus had been reported in Dallas County as of Saturday morning.

The state health department said there were 51 cases of the virus in Texas as of Saturday.

Community centers close

Following emergency declarations from Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson Thursday, the city announced that several community centers and courts would be closing through March 20.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, including the MLK recreation center and library branch, and the West Dallas Multipurpose Center were both closed beginning Saturday, the city said.

All events and room reservations at the buildings were cancelled, and social service appointments are being rescheduled or transitioned into phone calls, the city said. The city said the Foremost Family Health Clinic would remain open.

The city said the South Dallas and West Dallas community courts are also closed to the public, and that defendants can call 214-930-6960 to be redirected to another court.

The Dallas Municipal Court also cancelled all trials and jury duty until April 3 and said they would be rescheduled for a later date. The court said all other court hearings and walk-in services would continue.
