A man in his 40s with no history of travel or contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 is La Salle County's second confirmed case of the coronavirus.
The man is recovering at home in isolation — his hometown was not released.
La Salle County confirmed its first case Thursday — a high school student recovering at home with no history of travel to an affected area and no connection to a known case of COVID-19.
La Salle County Health Department Administrator Julie Kerestes said since both confirmed cases are considered to be "community acquired," it makes it clear community spread of the virus is present throughout the county.
Public health officials are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are working to identify and investigate all individuals who were in contact with the case.
La Salle County Health Department officials expect to see additional cases and residents need to assume they have been exposed to COVID-19. According to statistics shared Sunday on testing, the county agency has tested 46 residents, 34 tests have come back negative and six were pending. Four tests were not received by the lab.
Every single La Salle County resident can help by staying home, limiting the number of people they are in contact with, maintaining a 6-foot distance from others, and washing their hands, the agency said.
If someone develops symptoms of cough and fever, they should stay home and isolate themselves from others. Should symptoms worsen, they should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
"We continue to work with our local and state partners in a collaborative response effort to COVID-19," Kerestes said. "The La Salle County Health Department remains dedicated to protecting the health and safety of our residents and doing what we can to prevent further spread of the virus.”
If you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, a fever, cough or shortness of breath:
Those with mild illness should not go to a hospital or other care centers but instead should stay home and rest until they’re well. If symptoms progress, it is advisable to call your healthcare provider who will advise if you need medical treatment. Anyone with respiratory symptoms who is planning to seek care at a walk-in clinic should call in advance for instruction. Based on the CDC guidelines, the healthcare provider will evaluate the symptoms by phone and provide instruction.
Anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. If you are seeking emergency medical care and think you could have coronavirus, tell the medical workers in advance so they can prepare for your arrival.
