First COVID-19 case in Cass Co.; total in Minnesota rises to 169 - WDIO

The patient developed symptoms on March 9th and sought health care treatment on March 16th, the news release says.

“The resident is currently isolated at home," Jeri Seegmiller, County Team Leader with Cass County Health Human and Veteran Services said in the news release. “People identified positive will be asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days from their exposure date and should monitor for worsening symptoms.”

The news release says the Minnesota Department of Health informed the county of the confirmed case Saturday evening.

On Saturday, St. Louis County confirmed their first case. This came on the same day Minnesota reported the first COVID-19 related death.

Approximately 4680 people have been tested in the state so far. According to the Department of Health, the overall age range of patients is ten to 94 with a median age of 44 years.

Counties with at least one positive test include: Anoka, Benton, Blue Earth, Carver, Cass, Chisago, Clay, Dakota, Dodge, Filmore, Hennepin, Jackson, Le Sueur, Martin, Mower, Nicollet, Olmsted, Ramsey, Renville, Rice, Scott, Stearns, St. Louis, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, Washington and Wright.

According to the Department of Health, one case is in an assisted living facility.

"Since the start of the outbreak, 17 COVID-19 patients in Minnesota have been hospitalized, ten patients are currently hospitalized, five of which are in intensive care. The rest of the patients are recovering at home," Michael Schommer, Communications Director for the  Department of Health said.

The Department of Health says testing is still limited to priority groups, however, they have made progress in keeping up with demand.

"We want to say thank you to Mayo. Thanks to them we have eliminated the backlog of laboratory specimens that needed testing and we believe that we can now keep pace with the volume of priority population testing," Kris Ehresmann, Department of Health Infectious Disease Director said.

The Department of Health continues to encourage people to stay home when they are sick and practice social distancing.

According to the Department of Helath, the next step of community mitigation would be to shelter in place.

"Shelter in place is something that the governor's office is thinking about. I think one thing we have to consider if we take action on something like that is at what point do we stop? And those are important questions to think about because I expect we will continue to see increase in the number of cases," Ehresmann said.
