First confirmed COVID-19 case reported in St. Louis County, MN reports first death - KBJR 6

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MN -- The Minnesota Department of Health has confirmed a presumptive case of COVID-19 in St. Louis County.

Health officials say the woman in her late 60s, has no underlying health conditions, and is currently recovering at home.

Her infection is linked to domestic travel, and not the result of community transmission, according to health officials

“At this point, there has been no request for the County to provide any essential services," Amy Westbrook, St. Louis County Public Health Division Director, said. “It is believed she has had no contact with anyone outside her family. Close contacts have been asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days from their exposure date and will be monitored for fever and respiratory symptoms."

County health officials did not say where the patient lives. They added that it doesn't matter because we should all take the same precautions no matter what.

However, during the same press conference, Dr. Van Deelen with St. Luke's Hospital said, "if you're wondering if COVID-19 is in Duluth, it's here."

County officials would not confirm that information.

State health officials also reported Minnesota's first death due to COVID-19. The Minnesota Department of Health says an individual from Ramsey County died.

Van Deelen said while this is St. Louis County's first case, he says the hospitals are not surprised, and they're prepared to manage it.

He added that if you have what seems like a bad cold, you don't necessarily have to be seen by a provider. Van Deelen added that the vast majority of COVID-19 patients will be fine and have mild symptoms and should consider recovering at home if they are able since there is no known treatment for COVID-19.

While Van Deelen encouraged people to continue social distancing, he also reminded the community to take a walk, get fresh air, and talk with loved ones to help alleviate stress.
