Broomfield confirms first coronavirus case - Longmont Times-Call

The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Broomfield, the city and county announced Friday morning.

The patient is a 60-year-old woman, according to a city news release, and has been in isolation.

The woman self-isolated while awaiting test results an will remain isolated until symptoms subside, according to city spokeswoman Carolyn Romero.

Broomfield Public Heath will investigate to identify individuals the ill person may have come in contact with, the release states, and the office will provide guidance, including recommendations for self-monitoring, potential quarantine, and/or testing, depending on their situation.

“The patient is isolated at home and we wish her a speedy recovery,” Broomfield Public Health Director Jason Vahling said. “The community should know the Public Health Department and city and county of Broomfield are prepared, activated and mobilized to follow up on contacts she has had and monitor those contacts as needed. Given the community spread in the metro area, we expect to see future cases and we need the entire community’s help to practice social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19 during these difficult times.”

Broomfield has been, and will continue, encouraging social distancing to slow the spread and prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed, the release states.

City and County Manager Jennifer Hoffman said Broomfield has been anticipating this day would come and the city is ready. With the support of Mayor Patrick Quinn and City Council, Broomfield has already taken steps to protect the community by closing non-essential city buildings and services, she said.

“Now it’s time to come together as a community and commit to protecting each other through precautionary social distancing and proactive self-isolation at the first sign of symptoms,” Hoffman said.

Since the state handles testing, it is unclear how many Broomfield residents have been tested. According to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment, as of Friday morning, there are 277 cases of coronavirus statewide and there  have been four virus-related deaths.

COVID-19 is primarily spread through respiratory droplets spreadvia coughs or sneezes. People who have prolonged contact within 6 feet of a person with the virus are most at risk of transmission.

Vahling has said that 80% of people who test positive for the virus will experience mild symptoms, but all residents should take prevention measures such as washing hands for 20 seconds, staying home when sick, increasing efforts to clean commonly touched surfaces and staying informed through reliable sources.

If residents exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath, they are asked to stay home and call a medical provider to determine if they need to be tested. Broomfield health officials said residents should not not go to an emergency room for a COVID-19 test unless they are having a medical emergency, such as difficulty breathing.

Adults 60 and older and people who have serious chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for more serious COVID-19 illness, according to the news release
