STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A “soft lockdown” was put in place Thursday morning at Tottenville High School in Huguenot, but was lifted after a subsequent search found no weapons, officials said.

The school went into the lockdown “out of an abundance of caution” before the NYPD cleared the location, said Nathaniel Styer, a city Department of Education (DOE) spokesman.

A soft lockdown is issued when there is “no imminent danger,” according to the DOE’s website. It requires administrative and building response teams, along with school safety agents, to meet at a designated command post for further direction.

Styer said no threat was made against the school. It was not immediately clear what prompted the search for weapons.

Staff at the school said police arrived to the location after 11 a.m. and conducted interviews at the school.

Numerous police vehicles were observed outside the school Thursday afternoon. The NYPD did not immediately have information concerning its response.

This is a developing story. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
