Maine South High School in Park Ridge was briefly placed on lockdown Monday while police investigated a call of gunshots possibly fired nearby, a police department official said.
Park Ridge Police Executive Officer Tom Gadomski said officers responded to the area of Dee and Talcott Roads shortly before 11:30 a.m. for a call of shots fired.
No one was shot and police are still investigating, Gadomski said. No one was in custody as of 12:30 p.m., he said.
The call prompted a large police response to the area and led Maine South, which is located south of the intersection, to institute a “soft lockdown” for about 20 minutes, said Maine Township High School District 207 Spokesman Brett Clark.
A soft lockdown means no visitors can enter the school and no one inside the school can leave the building, he said. Regular activities, including classes and passing periods, continued, Clark said.
The soft lockdown ended shortly after 12 p.m., he said.
Parents were advised of the lockdown in emails sent by Principal Ben Collins.
