MILLSBORO, DE- The town of Millsboro is announcing the soft open for the new Avid hotel. The nearly 80 room hotel is expected to help with housing shortages for laborers, and increase the town’s image with potential developers.
“Having a hotel puts you on the map as a hub and I really think Millsboro is starting to become that retail and restaurant hub on Delmarva and I hope by the end of my career it could be the next Salisbury or Dover,” said Millsboro Town Manager Sheldon Hudson. He tells us the new AVID hotel was a necessity to keep up with the growth of the town.
“We have a lot of residential growth in Millsboro we are first of the 44 downstate cities where growth is concerned,” Hudson said. He says that kind of expansion requires contractors for the projects, and they need a place to stay. Avid’s hotel manager Purav Patel agrees.
“If your doing work in Selbyville or Millsboro the only other hotel option for a franchise hotel would be in ocean city or Rehoboth and those are an hour away,” Patel said adding “We’d be a great little travel hub in between the different areas for contractor or guest traveling in and out of the area.”
However, the design of the hotel, with a minimalist layout, grab-and-go breakfast, and a focus on quick turnover of customers, contractors aren’t the only one the town and the hotel hope to appeal to.
“We’re hoping the weekend travelers coming to the beach that down wants to pay beach prices for a room or don’t want a weekly rental can stay in Millsboro,” Hudson said. They say they’re hoping people will spend some of that money they saved by supporting local businesses and attracting new ones.
“Sit-down restaurants tend to follow hotels so we are hoping that the addition of it will help the town recruit more sit-down restaurants,” Hudson said.
He tells us that the increased capacity of the hotel allows the town to consider having large-scale recreation events, with plenty of room in town to host visitors.
