GHENT — Terry Smith of Slayton discovered a 1930 Chevy Coupe in Prior Lake back in 2001.
“It was all rusted out,” Smith said. “It was just a basket case. All parts.”
For the next 20 years, Smith worked on his Chevy Coupe on and off when not driving semi. His wife, Peggy Jo, jokingly called his car project “a money pit.”
It’s a lot of money, a lot of fun,” Smith said.
Smith’s wife died 10 years ago, and he wishes she could have seen how the inferno red car looks today. But the car is definitely getting noticed by lots of other people. Smith has taken the to more than 20 car shows.
On Saturday, he drove his Chevy Coupe under some shade behind other vehicles entered into the Ghent Cruisers Car Show during Belgian American Days Saturday. His car ended up being awarded the Best of Show.
“It’s a nice car,” Smith said after the award ceremony.
Organizer Joette Remme said 108 vehicles, from cars, trucks to motorcycles were entered into the show. That is up from 100 in 2020.
“Generally, we are at the 90 range,” Remme said. “We saw a lot of new ones. So that’s even better.”
Smith called the show one of the best ones.
“People are nice, the food is good. I mean you can’t find nicer people,” he said.
The rolle bolle tournament also experienced a good turnout. According to organizer Chauncey Welvaert, 19 teams completed in the men’s division and 13 teams competed in the novice. The tournament attracted players from Illinois, Iowa, Canada and other parts of Minnesota.
