Last week, nearly half of Idaho’s new coronavirus cases were traced to just two of Idaho’s 44 counties — Ada and Bonneville.
The trends extended to Idaho’s college campuses.
Boise State University and Idaho Falls’ College of Eastern Idaho both reported case increases last week. Together, the two institutions account for more than 40 percent of new campus cases.
Here is this week’s campus coronavirus case roundup.
Increasing
Boise State University. A second successive week of across-the-board increases.
Boise State reported 47 campus cases for the seven-day period ending Thursday, up from 29 the previous week. Thirty-three cases involved students who live off campus, 12 involved students living on campus, and two cases involved faculty or staff.
Meanwhile, 2.3 percent of campus coronavirus tests came back positive, up from 1.7 percent the previous week.
Ten of Boise State’s 153 isolation beds were in use Friday, up from six the previous week.
College of Eastern Idaho. As case numbers increase significantly in Bonneville County, CEI also reported a spike. The college reported 12 new cases last week, up from two cases the previous week. Nine of the new cases involve employees and three involve students. CEI has reported a total of 184 cases since August.
Lewis-Clark State College. Three active cases reported Friday, up from one case the previous week. Two of the new cases were reported on the Lewiston campus. Two cases involve staff, and the third involves a student.
Decreasing
University of Idaho. A week after a sharp increase in cases, numbers fell off significantly.
The U of I reported 28 new cases for the week ending March 5, compared to 61 cases the preceding week.
Positive test rates also dropped off significantly, falling to 3.8 percent. The positive rate was 7.6 percent the preceding week.
Northwest Nazarene University. Another weekly decrease: NNU reported only one new case last week, involving a non-resident student. NNU reported three new cases the previous week. The university is tracking two active cases, and 14 people were under stay-at-home directives Friday.
College of Southern Idaho. No new cases reported for the seven-day period ending Thursday, after two cases the previous week.
Flat
Brigham Young University-Idaho. On Sunday, BYU-Idaho reported 25 active cases involving students and three active cases involving an employee. On March 7, BYU-Idaho also reported a total of 28 active cases.
Idaho State University. For the seven-day period ending Tuesday, ISU again reported 20 new cases. Sixteen of the cases occurred on the main campus in Pocatello, and 13 cases involve students.
ISU was investigating three case clusters, two involving off-campus housing, and a third at the Early Learning Center in Idaho Falls.
North Idaho College. Two cases last week, unchanged from the previous week. One of last week’s cases involved a student, and the other involved an employee. Since July, 301 students and employees have reported a positive test.
The College of Idaho. One case reported last week. The C of I has reported 108 positive tests for the school year.

Through Sunday, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has linked at least 6,742 coronavirus cases to K-12 students and employees.
University officials believe the outbreaks are tied to a handful of Greek houses and on-campus apartments.
The state administered a record 74,944 vaccinations this week, an increase of 23 percent. The surge was driven, in part, by the arrival of the newly approved one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Parents say their children have had to become more resilient and responsible to be successful in online classes.
The accelerated schedule could be good news for thousands of Idahoans who are biding their time in the vaccination queue — including college and university staff and students.
