The seven-day average of new daily COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin climbed higher than ever Wednesday as the state reported more than 1,400 new cases.
The state Department of Health Services reported 1,408 new cases as well as 10,788 negative tests, for a positivity rate of 11.5%.
Wisconsin also reported eight additional deaths from the virus, bringing the statewide death toll to 1,228.
The numbers Wednesday were on par with results reported Tuesday, and they came as the state continued to see a surge of new coronavirus cases: DHS has reported more than 1,300 new cases on six of the last seven days.
The consistently high new daily case counts have led to a rising seven-day new case average since the start of September. On Wednesday the seven-day average was at a new record of 1,339.
Over 1.3 million people have been tested statewide for the virus. Of the 92,712 Wisconsinites who have tested positive:
- 87%, or 80,627, have "recovered" by DHS standards, meaning there is documented proof their symptoms have resolved or it's been 30 days since their diagnosis.
- 11.7%, or 10,839, are considered "active," meaning they aren't recovered and haven't died.
UW-Madison students grapple with virus
The new cases come as colleges and universities across the state continue to grapple with outbreaks of the virus on and around their campuses.
Nearly 90% of University of Wisconsin-Madison students who have tested positive for COVID-19 have exhibited symptoms, public health officials said Wednesday.
According to Madison and Dane County’s combined health department, contact tracing has found that 88% of students who test positive have shown some level of illness.
"There are a lot of theories about what COVID-19 is and isn't, but the science and data from these cases on the UW-Madison campus shows most people who get it, get sick," Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said in a statement.
As of Tuesday, 2,160 UW-Madison students had tested positive, according to the local health department. At least 7% of the university’s undergraduate students are positive, the department said.
On Wednesday UW-Madison reported 47 new cases: 10 students and one employee tested positive at on-campus testing sites, and 35 students and one employee tested positive at off-campus sites.
The school knows of one student hospitalized with complications of the virus, it announced Wednesday. Students and employees are not required to tell the university if they are hospitalized.
Students in Washington, Ozaukee counties test positive
The Washington-Ozaukee Public Health Department is investigating COVID-19 cases at 16 schools across Washington and Ozaukee counties, according to the department's COVID-19 dashboard.
The department defines a school investigation as one or more positive cases in a school setting that cause the quarantine of close contacts or additional positive cases.
According to the county health department, there are 27 children with active coronavirus cases within the West Bend School District boundaries. Twenty-one of those are between the ages of 15 and 18.
These cases are not necessarily all at public schools; the boundaries include public as well as private, parochial and home schools.
As of last week, West Bend School District said 37 students and one staff member had been placed in quarantine after having close contact with three people who had tested positive for COVID-19.
The number of active cases within other school district boundaries are:
- Kewaskum: 12
- Grafton: 11
- Cedarburg: 11
- Hartford Union High School: 10
- Mequon-Thiensville: 9
- Port Washington-Saukville: 8
- Slinger: 8
- Germantown: 5
- Northern Ozaukee: 2
- Cedar Grove-Belgium: 1
Global cases have surpassed 29.6 million as of mid-Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 6.6 million of those cases and 196,300 deaths were in the United States.
