Florida recorded 15,299 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, state health officials said. It was a new one-day record for the state, which hadn’t previously topped 12,000 daily cases.
The surge in Florida, where total cases are currently near 270,000, comes amid rising case totals in dozens of states.
Coronavirus infections continued to surge in California, Arizona and other states, while the U.S. military said dozens of new cases were confirmed among service members and related personnel stationed in Japan.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos renewed her call to reopen schools on Sunday morning news shows. Other administration and state-level officials called for caution, as tensions over how best to manage the pandemic shifted toward educational institutions.
The number of daily infections in the U.S. surpassed 60,000 for a third consecutive day on Saturday, after reaching a record of more than 66,000 cases the previous day, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University showed. The U.S. has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, with nearly 3.25 million, according to Johns Hopkins.
California, Florida, Texas, Arizona and Georgia reported near-record daily Covid-19 cases on Saturday, accounting for about 85% of the nation’s total. South Carolina reported its highest number of cases in a single day on Saturday, with a total of 2,239.
A day after breaking its own one-day case record on Friday, Wisconsin’s health department said Saturday’s total was even higher. “Please take steps to avoid illness & #StopTheSpread,” the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said in a tweet.
Some, but not all, of the soaring case counts can be attributed to expanded testing that is detecting asymptomatic or less-severe cases, often among younger people. California has conducted the most tests of any state, exceeding 5.2 million, followed by New York and Florida, Johns Hopkins data show.
President Trump, meanwhile, was seen wearing a mask at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Saturday, amid growing pressure from Republicans and Democrats to wear facial coverings, as the number of cases in the country has climbed.

“I’ve never been against masks, but I do believe they have a time and a place,” he said.
Mr. Trump, in an interview last month, allowed for the possibility that some Americans wore facial coverings not as a preventive measure but as a way to signal disapproval of him.
While coronavirus cases in the nation have been rising for weeks, related deaths have only recently shown signs of edging higher. California, Texas and Florida have seen their highest daily death tolls this month. Arizona, South Carolina and Alaska joined Texas as the states with the biggest percentage increases in deaths since the start of July, with fatalities rising more than 20%. Across the U.S. more than 134,000 people have died since the onset of the pandemic in March.

Overseas, the U.S. military said Sunday it has ordered Marine personnel on the Japanese island of Okinawa to stay on base after a coronavirus outbreak involving dozens of cases drew criticism from the island’s governor.
The Marine Corps told Okinawa officials that a total of 61 new coronavirus infections were confirmed among U.S. service members and related personnel on Okinawa between July 7 and July 11, said Marine spokesman Maj. Ken Kunze.
Okinawa’s governor said U.S. service members and others living on bases in Okinawa ventured out to nighttime entertainment spots on the island and held beach parties around the Fourth of July holiday.
Maj. Kunze said the Marine Corps has stepped up protective measures, including prohibiting off-base activities and closing nonessential facilities. He said mess halls would serve takeout food only.
Japan on Sunday reported 386 new cases nationwide, with more than half in Tokyo.
Understanding Coronavirus
India, which has been hit hard by the pandemic, reported a record number of new cases for a third straight day. The country’s Health Ministry said there were 28,637 new cases, taking the total number to more than 849,000. Nearly 23,000 people have died from Covid-19 in India, including 551 on Saturday. Authorities said the tech hub of Bangalore would be put under lockdown beginning Tuesday evening to control a recent surge in cases there.
Hospital authorities in Mumbai said that Amitabh Bachchan, one of India’s most popular film actors, is in stable condition after the 77-year-old posted on Twitter that he had tested positive for the virus.
Australia’s Victoria state reported 273 new cases on Sunday. Premier Daniel Andrews said most students in the Melbourne area, which entered another lockdown last week, will go back to remote learning when school resumes later this month.
