Connecticut has its first case of coronavirus involving a resident, Gov. Ned Lamont said on Sunday.
The patient, a resident of Wilton who is 40 to 50 years of age, is being treated at Danbury Hospital, according to a statement released by the governor’s office.
The person most likely became infected with the virus during a recent trip to California and sought medical care shortly after returning to Connecticut, the statement said.
The state is awaiting confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We have been expecting for some time that a Connecticut resident would become infected with Covid-19, so this should not come as a surprise to anybody,” Mr. Lamont said. “We wish this patient a full recovery, and we know he is being cared for by highly competent medical teams.”
As of noon on Sunday, Connecticut had tested a total of 30 people, including the presumptive positive case, at its Department of Public Health State Laboratory. The state was awaiting the results of eight more tests.
On Saturday, Mr. Lamont said a New York doctor who commutes to work at Bridgeport Hospital tested positive for the coronavirus. Mr. Lamont said the physician did not show visible symptoms while treating patients and isolated himself.
Connecticut was approved by the federal government to test people in-state for the virus on Feb. 28. In that first weekend, two people were tested, both of which came back negative, according to the state’s Department of Public Health.
In neighboring New York State, officials have confirmed 106 cases of the coronavirus as of early Sunday, including 13 in New York City; five in Nassau County; two in Rockland County; two in Saratoga County; and one each in Suffolk and Ulster counties. Westchester County, the epicenter of the epidemic in New York, now has 82 cases, up from 70 on Saturday.
On Saturday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo declared a state of emergency, which allows the state to respond more quickly by lifting regulations.
