Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny had a disappointing box office debut as the long-awaited sequel only grossed $60 million in the US in its opening weekend.

Indiana Jones 5 had reportedly hoped for a domestic debut closer to $65 million but the movie has been greeted with lukewarm reviews, which may have dampened people's excitement for the film.

The film may have struggled to bring in younger, new fans as The Hollywood Reporter stated that the opening weekend audience was largely older viewers. 42 percent of tickets were bought by those aged 45 and up, which included 23 percent bought by those aged 55 and older.

This tepid opening failed to beat the earnings of the franchise's fourth movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which made $100 million in the US across its three-day opening weekend. That, like the first three films, was directed by Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg was only on producing duties for Dial of Destiny, with James Mangold serving as director. Harrison Ford returns as Indy for the final time while Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen also star.

This isn't the only unwanted record that Dial of Destiny has set. The film has also received the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the Indiana Jones franchise.

Raiders of the Lost Ark received 93%, The Last Crusade earned 84%, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull rated at 77%, and Temple of Doom achieved 76%. Dial of Destiny, at the time of writing, sits on a measly 49%.

Mangold commented on these negative reviews, stating: "When you’re in franchise land, it’s very hard for critical thinkers to overlook what I’m sure their editors want, which is this business prism of how does it rate to the other ones?"

"I always thought if I were second or third best to one of the greatest films of all time, I’d be good. I mean, it all vaporises later. Either the movie will live or it won’t."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was released in UK cinemas on June 28 and in US cinemas on June 30.
