He survived the Taliban but not DC's soft-on-crime policies - Washington Examiner

A man who risked his life in Afghanistan serving as a translator for the Army was brutally slain — not by the Taliban in the streets of Kabul, but by young criminals in the streets of Washington who have been coddled by the district's Democratic leadership.

Nasrat Ahmad Yar was driving for Lyft to help provide for his wife and four children. Ahmad Yar had worked for the U.S. government for nearly 20 years, starting at age 10 and working his way up to becoming an interpreter for U.S. forces. He survived the collapse of the Afghan government at the hands of the Taliban, fleeing to the United States in 2021.

LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CONGRESS SHOULD SECURE BIDEN’S SECRET EMAILS

He was killed just after midnight on Monday after dropping off passengers. He was surrounded by four males who appeared to be teenagers. One of them shot and killed Ahmad Yar, with surveillance video showing one of the suspects saying, “He was reaching,” in response to another saying, “You just killed him.”

This is not merely some one-off event in Washington, a random act of violence that can be dismissed as a tragic outlier. This is what the Democrats have enabled with their twisted, pro-criminal view of crime policy. The district's Democrats have refused to even pretend that crimes committed by juveniles are a problem. According to District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb, carjackings and robberies by juvenile offenders that have the very real possibility of escalating into homicides are just “kids being kids.”

For context, more than two-thirds of carjacking arrests in the city in 2022 were juvenile offenders. There were 485 carjackings in 2022, compared to just 148 in 2018. Just “kids being kids,” right?

Despite that 227% increase in carjackings, the Council of the District of Columbia's Chairman Phil Mendelson denied that there was any such crime crisis in the district. That is why the D.C. Council set out to soften the punishments for violent crimes, including carjackings and murder.

Is it any surprise, then, that Ahmad Yar was killed in an attempted carjacking by what appears to be a gang of juvenile offenders in a district that wants to go soft on juveniles, carjackers, and murderers?

This is a natural outgrowth of “criminal justice reform.” Ahmad Yar’s death is what the Democrats have inadvertently enabled by seeking the softest possible sentences for any and all criminals. You can imagine that all four suspects, including the one who fired the fatal shot, will be given a slap on the wrist at most. After all, that is what Washington has been doing with criminals, especially young criminals, for the past few years.
