The goal of this wacky surf contest isn’t about who rides the best wave, it’s about who is having the most fun.

The Red Bull Foam Wreckers will ride into San Clemente on Saturday, Aug. 14, bringing surf stars Jamie O’Brien and Kalani Robb, known for their online antics using soft-top surfboards, to T-Street beach for the one-day event.

The “anti-surf contest surf contest,” put on by Red Bull and San Clemente-based Catch Surf, allows the public to participate in the surf event where only foam surfboards will be used in the waves. Previous events have happened in New Jersey and Waco, Texas, at the the BSR Surf Resort.

The event, dubbed as the “world’s most fun surf competition,” will offer up prizes for creative surfing throughout the day.

“The whole soft board movement is so fun, and the relatability of people surfing carefree is so appealing,” O’Brien said in an announcement about the event. “I feel like Red Bull Foam Wreckers is the coolest contest in the world, because anybody could win. It’s not about how good you are, it’s about how much fun you can have and how creative you can be.”

O’Brien, a Hawaiian surfer who grew up near the famed Pipeline surf break, travels the world filming videos of his wild escapades for his YouTube series “Who is JOB.” Pushing the limits, he took soft tops to the Wedge in Newport Beach when it’s bombing and surfed rushing river mouths and storm drains.

Robb, a former World Tour surfer who calls San Clemente home and is part of the Catch Surf team, will also be at the event.

Catch Surf, headquartered in San Clemente, was created in 2007 and now has stores throughout Southern California, including Laguna Beach and Malibu.

The two Catch Surf team riders helped popularize the soft-top surfboards, once thought of only for beginners who used the boards bought for cheap at big-box retailers.

The San Clemente company rolled out a new wave of soft-top boards now used by even more experienced surfers.

O’Brien, also a former pro competitor, said when he was growing up, having fun was why he got into surfing in the first place.

“A lot changes when things get serious and you start competing, there’s pressure to win contests and be on the World Tour and be a world champion. And after a while, no one is having any fun. Then soft tops came along and it all just fit perfectly, I felt like a little kid again,” he said. “It’s all about fun and inclusivity, and it’s so relatable.”

That’s what he hopes to see at T-Street during Saturday’s event.

“I want to see all the kids, all the families and all the local heroes show up, and I want to put on the best event possible for them,” he said. “This is what life is all about, having fun and getting together.”
