REDFORD, MI - It took a lot of trial and error to create this soft serve concoction. You can try Mountain Dew soft serve at this Michigan ice cream shop for just one week only.
It’s a yearly tradition for Josh and Cody Hutchison, the husband and wife team which owns Dairy Whip at 26215 Plymouth Road in Redford. For just one week each year, running through this Saturday, they make this special soft serve flavor which is a hit with customers.
“This will be the second time we’re running the Mountain Dew soft serve,” Cody told MLive. “We did it for one week last year. We do a flavor of the week every week, so that’s something our customers see us for is our flavors of the week like this.”
The Mountain Dew ice cream wasn’t easy to make. Josh, who also owns Independent Dairy in Monroe, says it took him more than a half dozen attempts to perfect the recipe, which is actually vegan.
“It’s Mountain Dew with some stabilizers and a few different things,” Josh told MLive while being careful not to reveal the recipe. “I finally got the consistency to be perfect. There’s no cream to it, but it comes out and tastes just like ice cream. We have a bunch of different chemists at Independent Dairy. One of them kind of gave me an idea and I put it together after eight tries.”

The menu includes two dozen hand-dipped ice cream flavors, a dozen soft serve flavors, flurries, shakes, sundaes and more. There’s also a large vegan menu. Josh showed off the new soft serve ice cream machine to MLive where nine different flavors come out of one spout, including Lemon, blue Moon and cherry to make Superman soft serve.
The Hutchinson’s bought Dairy Whip in 2019. This will be their second full season. The building used to be a diner in the 1960s before it became an ice cream shop.
