Topline
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in a speech after he voted to acquit former President Donald Trump on charges of inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, argued Trump is “practically and morally responsible” for the attack and said he could still face legal consequences.
Key Facts
McConnell and 42 other Senate Republicans voted to acquit Trump, while 7 Republicans voted with Democrats – far short of the 17 GOP votes needed to convict the former president.
McConnell said there is “no question” that Trump is “practically and morally responsible for provoking the events” of Jan. 6, alleging the rioters were “been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on earth."
McConnell even repeated the arguments made by the impeachment managers charged with prosecuting Trump, arguing he “did not act swiftly. He did not do his job,” and seizing on Trump’s tweet attacking then-Vice President Pence even when he was in danger.
However, McConnell echoed the complaints of most Republican senators that the trial of a former president is unconstitutional, and that other legal remedies outside of Congress will have to be taken.
Crucial Quote
"We have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation. And former presidents are not immune from being accountable by either one,” McConnell said, stating Trump is “still liable for everything he did in office.”
Chief Critic
“If only McConnell was so righteous as the Democrats trampled Trump and the Republicans while pushing Russia collusion bullshit for 3 years or while Dems incited 10 months of violence, arson, and rioting,” tweeted Donald Trump Jr. “Yea then he just sat back and did jack shit.”
