Massachusetts reports 1 million first doses of coronavirus vaccines administered, case stats continue to improve - Boston Herald

Massachusetts now has given out more than a million first shots of the coronavirus vaccine, the state announced Saturday, as Bay State health officials reported 53 new COVID-19 deaths and 1,822 new cases.

The state is reporting that 1,000,734 first doses of the vaccine have been administered — around 14.5% of the state’s approximately 6.9 million people. Of those, 372,172 — about 5.4% of the total population — have been inoculated with the requisite second shot.

That’s up from 976,033 first and 347,623 second doses on Friday.

Saturday’s count of 1,822 new coronavirus cases follows Friday’s report of 1,679 cases, Thursday’s 1,803 cases and Wednesday’s 1,322 cases.

The Bay State’s seven-day weighted average positive test rate without higher education institutions is 3.4%.

The count of estimated active cases in Massachusetts is now 36,316, far down from 98,750 estimated active infections at the start of the year.

The seven-day average of confirmed cases is now 1,161, a significant decline from the peak of 6,240 cases Jan. 8.

There have now been 538,328 total confirmed coronavirus cases in Massachusetts. With probable cases included, that total rises to 567,764.

Saturday’s 53 new virus deaths and four new probable virus deaths brings the state’s total recorded death toll to 15,462. The seven-day average of daily deaths nudged down slightly to 43.7, compared to 76.7 daily deaths at the end of January — the highest point since the spring surge.

Of the state’s total deaths, 8,467 have been in long-term care facilities. Four hundred and twenty-four of those facilities have seen cases among residents or staff, accounting for 34,556 of the state’s total case count.

Statewide hospitalizations have also been decreasing. Hospitalizations on Friday went down by 20 patients, bringing the total to 970.

There are 246 patients in the ICU and 152 are intubated, numbers that are both trending downward.

The seven-day average of the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 has declined from 2,347 patients at the start of January to an average of 1,069 patients now.

The United States has now reported 28 million coronavirus cases and more than 497,000 deaths. Cases have topped 110 million globally and deaths have surpassed 2.4 million.
