DOJ releases investigative file from Jacob Blake case - WMTV – NBC15

KENOSHA, Wis. (WMTV) - The Wisconsin Department of Justice released their investigative file and other records in the Jacob Blake case following the Kenosha County District Attorney’s decision not to charge officers involved in the shooting.

The state DOJ released records, digital photos, video, and audio records for the public to view on their website.

Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley announced Tuesday that none of the Kenosha police officers involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake will be charged.

Graveley said Tuesday that he had decided not to charge Officer Rusten Sheskey, who shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times after responding to a domestic dispute on Aug. 23. The other officers involved will also not be charged.

The district attorney also noted that Jacob Blake will not be charged either in the case.

Jacob Blake’s family held a press conference following the decision not to charge any of the officers involved. They said they believed that “all elements of attempted homicide were met.”

Attorneys for the Blake family said they were “immensely disappointed” with the decision and said the 20-second video was very clear with what happened.

Gov. Tony Evers said it was “clear” Tuesday that the state and country has failed to deliver the promise of peace, equity and justice for Black Americans.

“Today’s decision is further evidence that our work is not done—we must work each day in earnest toward a more just, more fair, and more equitable state and country, and to combat the racism experienced by Black Wisconsinites. I hope for peace and justice for Jacob, his family, and the entire Kenosha community. I reaffirm my commitment to action to build a more just, more equitable state for every Wisconsinite. And I ask those who will exercise their right to assemble tonight and in the days ahead to please do so peacefully and safely.”

Graveley explained that it is on the state to prove that use of force was not necessary in this case.

The district attorney also noted that they hired a use of force expert in this case to have an independent party review the case. That expert was former Madison Police Chief, Noble Wray. Wray provided an analysis of the case and to decide if the use of force was reasonable in that case.

Cellphone video shows Blake walking away from officers and opening the door of an SUV moments before Sheskey opened fire.

The shooting left Blake paralyzed and triggered several nights of protests in Kenosha, with some turning violent.
