CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – A man committed suicide after barricading himself inside a Port Charlotte home following a domestic-related shooting.
Multiple gun shots were heard on Great Falls Terrace around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. When deputies arrived, they found a woman shot to death in the driver seat of her car in the drive way of the home.
The man accused of shooting her ran back into the home where he barricaded himself for several hours, deputies reported. After unsuccessful attempts to make contact through negotiators, the man committed suicide. He was found dead inside the home, according to CCSO.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has a heavy police presence at the home as they investigate. A SWAT team responded to the scene as well.
Names will not be released at this time, as deputies work to locate next of kin, CCSO reported.
During the standoff, deputies asked residents to stay inside unless they were ordered to be evacuated by law enforcement within the immediate area.
Several nearby schools were placed on soft lockdown but the lockdown has since been lifted.
