2001 a Japanese game designer for Nintendo named Katsuya Eguchi wanted to capture the feeling of isolation he felt after moving to a new city alone. The result of his creation is the Animal Crossing series.

Eguchi explains:

"Animal Crossing features three themes: family, friendship and community. But the reason I wanted to investigate them was a result of being so lonely when I arrived in Kyoto! Chiba is east of Tokyo and quite a distance from Kyoto, and when I moved there I left my family and friends behind. In doing so, I realised that being close to them – being able to spend time with them, talk to them, play with them – was such a great, important thing. I wondered for a long time if there would be a way to recreate that feeling, and that was the impetus behind the original Animal Crossing."

19 years ago, a family man created something to ease his lonliness. Now, in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is fulfilling it's original purpose to a magnitude it's creator likely never imagined. The online artist @komachu_oekaki loves Animal Crossing and their work is a charming reminder of sincerely heartfelt the series can be.

Now, take a deep breath and enjoy a nice walk down Animal Crossing street.
