FRANKFORT — In order to prepare for a successful start to learning in the era of COVID-19, Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools will be using a "soft start" return to school.

The "Soft Start for a Safer Start" plan includes bringing 50% of students into the school for the first two weeks. The "soft start" will allow for teachers and students to get acquainted with their classroom community, learn classroom procedures and use online learning tools.

They will have opportunities for on-the-job training with new schedules, cleaning protocols and building procedures, as well as preparing for whatever remote learning scenario presents itself for the 2020-2021 school year.

The "soft start" will provide small groups of students the opportunity to get used to the learning environment and its protocols and requirements in accordance with CDC guidelines and the governors MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap. It will allow teachers to collect data to ensure optimal student growth and students to ease back into the classroom and school routines.

Students will be divided into "A" and "B" groups. Information has been sent to parents via social media and email.

More information on the soft start plan can be found at www.frankfort.k12.mi.us or call your student's principle.

The plans include bringing all face-to-face students back together beginning Sept. 21. FEAS recognizes the soft start plan will require some logistical consideration by families. The school thanks families and the community in advance for their cooperation to make the start of this unusual school year as smooth as possible for students and staff.

The district is also offering a virtual option for students and parents. Information regarding the virtual option can also be found at www.frankfort.k12.mi.us. Parents choosing this learning option must make their decision by Aug. 28. An opt-in form for virtual learning is available at www.frankfort.k12.mi.us.

FEAS plans to have all students who chose face-to-face learning in school five days a week beginning Sept. 21.
