Cavett Elementary reports two COVID-19 cases, bringing district total up to four since school started - KOLN

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Contact tracing is underway at Cavett Elementary School after the Lincoln Public School district confirmed there are two cases of the coronavirus in the school. This brings the district’s total to four cases since school started last week.

One of those cases is at Southwest High School and has lead to 48 people being quarantined, one is a district employee who doesn't work in a school and then there's the two at Cavett, which LPS said are unrelated to one another.

Mindy Burbach, director of communication for LPS said these are the only cases in the district and any rumors otherwise are untrue.

"If there's a positive case in our school buildings we will tell you there's a case in one of our school buildings, there's nothing to hide when there's a positive case," Burbach said.

Burbach said as soon as there's a confirmed case in a school, all staff and families at that school will be notified and any high-risk contacts will be called by the school or health department.

Burbach said they’ll only be reported cases in staff and students who were in a district building within 48 hours of testing positive for the virus. But they won’t be able to release many details about each case.

"We do have to walk that fine line because we want to provide as much information as we can, while protecting the privacy and respecting the privacy of everyone involved,"Burbach said.

Burbach urged community members not to add to rumors about additional cases, and to always go to the school or district with questions about cases, as Burbach said the district wants to be as transparent as possible.

“We understand there’s a lot of anxiety and fear around the unknown,” Burbach said. “We know there’s a lot of variables about COVID-19 and the risk of spread, we are working very closely with the health department to do everything we can to reduce the spread and we know part of that is communicating cases in our school buildings.”

Below is a statement that was sent out to Cavett school and staff:

“Cavett school families,

We are writing to inform you we were notified today there are two confirmed, unrelated positive cases of COVID-19 in Cavett. Since we have been notified of the positive results, we continue to follow our protocols and work with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department on the contact tracing process. Through that process, anyone identified as a close, high-risk contact with the positive case will be called directly and given instructions on next steps.

Please note: If you are not directly called, then you are not considered a high-risk close contact. If you have any questions, please contact the LLCHD at (402) 441-8006 or your healthcare provider.

Due to privacy rules and regulations, the name of the persons affected will not be released. We will continue to collaborate with LLCHD and follow their guidelines regarding the safety of students and staff.

COVID-19 is a contagious virus and spreads through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. The health department recommends everyone should be wearing face coverings, wash their hands frequently, self-screen and monitor for symptoms while in the community or at school.

In addition, if your child has had close contact with someone positive for COVID-19, or has been directed to self-isolate due to a positive COVID-19 result or for having contact with someone with COVID-19, please keep your child home. If your child is being tested for COVID-19, they need to self-quarantine at home until results are received and you have followed up with the school.
