Manhattan, NYC- Jun 8, 2020
After 100 days of the Covid-19 lockdown of New York City, Monday's opening was more of a fizzle rather than the long-anticipated grand re-opening. A short stroll from Union Square to Herald Square reveals more businesses still being shuttered, boarded up, and not open for business for curbside pick-up or in-store pick-up.
With huge fanfare from City Hall and the State, the opening of the City was announced, limited to curbside pick-up, or in situations where not possible, in-store pick-up for previously arranged orders or sales. The New York City subways resumed a normal schedule, the stations were marked with appropriate social distancing directions but was noticeably quiet as MTA workers passed out masks and bottles of New York State sanitizer.
Some businesses from big chains like Best Buy down to smaller local businesses like Fishs Eddy were open for in-store or curbside pick-up, but without the daily flow of local shoppers, and tourists, those businesses that decided to open were left wondering how long they can last.
Granted, it is still early as part of a four-part plan to re-open New York City after the 100 days "Pause" as the city closure was dubbed by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. Phase 1 restarts construction, manufacturing, and limited retail sales.
Phase 2 will expand the opening to professional services, finance and insurance, retail, administrative support, and real estate and rental leasing. Phase 3 will reopen restaurants and food services, as well as hotels. The final phase will bring back online education, the arts, entertainment, and recreation sectors.
All of the phases of New York City getting back to work is based on key health indicators set forth by the State with regards to the Covid-19 outbreak, and if a second wave of the pandemic potentially rolls through the city, then the city can go back into pause. There is always that potential.
Right now, New York City has kicked off a soft opening after the pause.
