Maryland coronavirus: Sixth positive case identified - Delmarva Now

State officials have identified a sixth case of novel coronavirus in Maryland.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced Monday that the state's sixth confirmed case is a Prince George's County resident who contracted the virus out of state, according to a news release from the governor's office.

“With the confirmation of a sixth case of novel coronavirus in our state, I want to again assure Marylanders that all levels of government are working together to respond to the COVID-19 threat in a cooperative and coordinated manner,” Hogan said. “We remain committed to bringing the full resources of state government to bear in order to protect our citizens and mitigate the spread of this virus.”

Hogan said in a tweet Tuesday that the resident is a woman in her 50s who contracted the virus while traveling to Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health contacted the patient, who is at home and "in good condition," Hogan added.

The Maryland Department of Health has identified no major concerns over exposure risk to the community and no connection with five previous positive cases. This is Prince George's County's first confirmed case, the release states.

Hogan signed emergency legislation which lets him tap into the state’s rainy day fund Monday — the same day state officials learned from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that there are 12 Maryland residents aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship.

Maryland's number of confirmed cases rose to five over the weekend. The state's first three positive diagnoses were linked to an Egyptian cruise of the Nile River that is connected to12 coronavirus cases in the Houston, Texas area.

On Monday, Hogan also announced the formation of a Coronavirus Response Team and introduced new guidance for state employees, which includes suspending all business-related travel outside of Maryland.

The Coronavirus Response Team will advise the administration on health and emergency management decisions during the coronavirus outbreak.

Hogan has directed state agencies to increase their response and preparedness efforts across all levels of government. State health carriers are required to waive all cost-sharing regarding COVID-19 testing at Hogan's direction.

On Tuesday, Hogan is scheduled to discuss Maryland's response to COVID-19 with his full Cabinet and meet with long-term care community representatives to ensure the protection of nursing home and retirement community residents, according to the release.

Maryland continues to operate under a state of emergency. The Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has elevated its state response activation level.
